The city of Kandalaksha with subordinated territory is in the south of Murmansk area. Northern part is located on Kola peninsula, southern - leaves on continent. In the West the region borders on Finland, in the south adjoins to Karelia. In XV - XVI centuries there were Russian settlements - Kandalaksha, Kovda, Knyaghnaya guba.
Till 1917 Kandalaksha was part of district Kemskogo of the Arkhangelsk province, subsequently in Karelian SSR. Kandalaksha and its area have come in structure of Murmansk area in May, 1938. In the same year to Kandalaksha the status of city is given. Into city of regional submission it is transformed in 1940.

Territory - 14,4 thousand square kilometers (9,9 % of territory of Murmansk area), including cities of Kandalaksha - 30,6 square kilometers.
Number of resident population - 60,1 thousand person
(2002), including cities of Kandalaksha - 48 thousand person.
Population density - 4,6 persons on 1 square kilometer.
In subordinated territory are located: settlement of city type Zelenoborskiy and 21 rural item.
Distance from Kandalaksha up to Murmansk - 277 kilometers.
